Karnataka Plans to Slash Disaster Losses by 75% by 2030
December 14, 2025
Karnataka suffered a major hit from natural disasters between 2015 and 2021, losing over ₹1.22 lakh crore. To fight back, the Karnataka State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has crafted a bold plan to build a 'disaster-resilient Karnataka.' The goal is to slash deaths, economic losses, and damage by 75% by 2029-30 compared to 2026 levels.
The new Karnataka State Disaster Risk Reduction (KSDRR) Road Map 2025-30 shows that 80% of the state faces drought risks, 22% could see moderate earthquakes, and 24% faces cyclones and strong winds. Human-made risks like road and industrial accidents are also included.
The report warns that about 61.1 million people are at risk across Karnataka. Agriculture took the biggest hit, with losses of ₹1.02 lakh crore, affecting 1.84 lakh hectares of crops. Horticulture losses stood at ₹10,102.81 crore. Roads suffered damage on 1.12 lakh km, costing ₹17,296 crore.
Drought has hit many districts hard, with Kalaburagi, Gadag, Davangere, and Belagavi experiencing it 14 times from 2001 to 2022. Some districts saw drought followed by severe floods due to climate change, hitting Raichur, Ballari, Kalaburgi, Yadgir, and Bidar.
The roadmap sets clear targets: by 2026, all departments and local governing bodies must prepare disaster management plans using 2025-26 data. Between 2027 and 2028, the state will work with partners to improve technology and knowledge for disaster risk reduction. This plan covers all sectors from agriculture to education and tourism to better protect Karnataka’s future.
