India Denies Letting Its Soil Be Used Against Bangladesh; Calls for Peaceful Polls
December 14, 2025
India on Sunday denied Bangladesh's accusations of allowing its territory to be used against Dhaka's interests. Bangladesh had summoned Indian Envoy Pranay Verma, protesting that former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was making "incendiary" statements from India urging supporters to disrupt Bangladesh’s coming elections. Bangladesh's Foreign Ministry demanded Hasina’s quick extradition to face death sentences given by a special tribunal. India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) firmly rejected these claims, saying, "India has never allowed its territory to be used for activities inimical to the interests of the friendly people of Bangladesh." The MEA said it supports free, fair, and peaceful elections in Bangladesh. It urged Bangladesh’s interim government to maintain law and order for the elections scheduled on February 12. This will be Bangladesh’s first general election after the Hasina government fell in August 2025 amid protests. The Awami League, Hasina’s party, has called the elections unfair under the current interim government led by Muhammad Yunus. The party said, "It is now clear that the current occupying authority is entirely biased, and that under their control it is impossible to ensure a fair and normal environment where transparency, neutrality, and the people's will can be reflected." Notably, Hasina was sentenced to death last month for "crimes against humanity" related to her government's crackdown on protests. She has been living in India since fleeing Bangladesh in August 2025 as unrest took hold.
