Prof. P.L. Patil, Senior agricultural scientist and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS), Dharwad, spoke at the seventh convocation of Sharnbasva University in Kalaburagi on Sunday. He said rapid progress in artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) is transforming engineering and enhancing life by improving infrastructure and services. "AI has fundamentally changed the way complex systems are designed, developed and deployed," said Prof. Patil. He explained that AI powers intelligent infrastructure which revolutionizes problem-solving. Machine learning and deep learning help in predictive maintenance, quality control, and design optimization. Prof. Patil noted that AI-driven technologies like autonomous vehicles, drones, and robots now navigate complex environments easily. He added that IoT creates interconnected systems that communicate smoothly, aiding growth in smart cities, homes, and transport networks. He urged engineering graduates to explore IoT’s vast potential, including designing energy-efficient systems and secure communication protocols. Prof. Patil also highlighted that 5G technology, with its high-speed data and connectivity, will revolutionize healthcare, finance, agriculture, and entertainment sectors. Discussing materials science advances, he mentioned new materials such as graphene and nanomaterials that enable innovations in electronics and energy storage. Cybersecurity emerged as a critical concern with rising dependence on digital systems. "With AI, IoT, 5G, materials science and cybersecurity advancing, the possibilities for engineers are limitless. It is the responsibility of engineers to harness these technologies to create a better future for humanity," said Prof. Patil. He observed possible talent shortages in the US due to diplomatic issues and said, "For decades, Indian engineers and computer scientists have been the backbone of American innovation." While praising India's economic growth, he also warned about challenges like wealth disparity, healthcare, education, and pollution. He called on graduates to combine skill with wisdom, empathy, and courage. He described convocation as a sacred milestone and said education is about critical thinking, ethics, and selfless service. Finally, Prof. Patil praised Sharnbaswappa Appa's contributions to education and social service and saluted Chancellor Dakshayini Appa for her visionary leadership.
