US Visa Social Media Vetting Causes Delays at Chennai Consulate; Applicants Given 221(g) Slips
December 15, 2025
A Reddit user shared his visa interview experience at the US consulate in Chennai after social media vetting began on December 15. The new process delayed visa approvals, with consulates reducing daily interviews and deferring many to next year. This Redditor’s appointment at 8:30 am went quickly, but he was handed a 221(g) slip, meaning further checks were needed. The visa officer asked about his job and social media accounts. "Have you been following the news?" the officer asked, explaining the extra social media screening.
The man’s passport was taken, and his visa status showed "refused" initially but was expected to change to "approved" once processing finished. His wife, interviewed simultaneously at the Hyderabad consulate, received an "approved" status by evening after a similar experience.
What is a 221(g) slip? It’s a US consulate notice when they cannot immediately approve or deny a visa. The slip usually means either missing documents or extra checks. With social media vetting in place now, almost all applicants seem to get this slip, delaying decisions.
On the slip, it stated: "Your application requires additional administrative processing. The application will be reconsidered when administrative processing is complete." Another Reddit user from China reported that everyone there also got 221(g) slips, with differences in passport handling among Beijing, Shanghai, and Wuhan consulates. No immediate approvals were given, indicating a broad impact of the new vetting process.
