Deadly Flash Floods in Morocco's Safi Kill 37, Cause Major Damage
December 15, 2025
At least 37 people have died after flash floods struck Morocco's coastal Safi region, state TV reports. Torrential rains on Sunday swept cars and huge piles of rubbish through Safi's main port city. Local officials say dozens are injured and treated in hospitals. About 70 homes in the old city center are flooded. Roads in and out of Safi are blocked due to damage and debris. One resident told AFP, "I've lost all my clothes. Only my neighbour gave me some to cover myself. I have nothing left. I've lost everything." Another survivor called for government trucks to remove floodwater. Moroccan authorities continue search and rescue missions. Experts link the extreme weather to the climate crisis. Morocco has faced seven years of drought, draining its reservoirs. Last year was the hottest on record. Rain and snow are forecast to continue, with snowfall expected in the Atlas mountains, as warned by Morocco's weather service.
