Sydney’s Avner’s Bakery Closes Permanently After Bondi Terror Attack Over Safety Fears
December 17, 2025
Avner’s Bakery, a well-known Jewish bakery in Surry Hills, Sydney, has closed its doors permanently after the Bondi beach terror attack. The bakery is run by celebrity chef Ed Halmagyi, also known as “Fast Ed.” A sign on the bakery’s window said, “Closed today, closed forever.” The message added, “It is no longer possible to make outwardly, publicly, proudly Jewish places and events safe in Australia.”
The notice, signed by “Ed and the Avner’s team,” spoke of the tough reality after “two years of almost ceaseless antisemitic harassment, vandalism and intimidation.” It explained that threats continue even after the recent terrorist attack, making it impossible to guarantee the safety of staff, customers, and families.
Ed Halmagyi has shared many incidents of antisemitic abuse since opening the bakery. Last year, he posted on Instagram about a threatening note left by so-called “cosplay radicals” that warned, “Be Careful.” Halmagyi dismissed the note, saying it was “Being Jewish in Sydney, 2024 edition.”
The bakery’s closure marks a sad moment after rising hate made it too dangerous to continue. Ed Halmagyi, who appeared on "Better Homes and Gardens" for 20 years, expressed heartbreak over the decision.
Support services for those affected by such events include Beyond Blue, Lifeline, and Griefline in Australia, Mind in the UK, and other international helplines found at befrienders.org.
