Rabbi Eli Schlanger Honored in Emotional Funeral After Bondi Terror Attack
December 17, 2025
Rabbi Eli Schlanger was remembered as “much more than a rabbi” at his funeral on Wednesday. He was a victim of the Bondi terror attack that happened on Sunday during a Jewish Hanukah event near Bondi beach. The 41-year-old, father of five, was called “a force” who died “doing what he loved best.” Rabbi Aron Moss called Schlanger “a loving friend,” “a mentor,” and said he was “more than a rabbi to his congregants.”
Schlanger was the first of the 15 victims to be named. He helped organise the Chanukah by the Sea event. The service took place at the Chabad of Bondi synagogue where Schlanger worked as assistant rabbi for 18 years. His father-in-law, Rabbi Yehoram Ulman, called him “a great leader among the Jewish people” and spoke through tears about his loss.
Many leaders joined the funeral. NSW Premier Chris Minns, NSW Opposition Leader Kellie Sloane, federal MP Allegra Spender, and Israel’s ambassador Amir Maimon attended. Former Prime Minister Scott Morrison was present, but current Prime Minister Anthony Albanese did not attend. Albanese said his thoughts are with the families but didn’t confirm attendance.
The synagogue was packed and emotional. Prayers were said in Hebrew and English. About 100 people waited outside or watched online. After the service, a procession carried Rabbi Schlanger’s coffin with mourners singing in Hebrew.
Rabbi Ulman called the attack Sydney's painful 7 October and mentioned the youngest victim, 10-year-old Matilda. He said the Jewish community will meet again to light eight Hanukah candles on the beach, declaring “the Jewish people are unbeatable.”
