NSW Plans Protest Ban After Bondi Attack Sparks Division Over Antisemitism
December 18, 2025
New South Wales Premier Chris Minns announced on Wednesday a new plan to ban protests anytime the state declares a terrorism designation. This comes after the deadly antisemitic attack at Bondi beach where 15 people died. The protest ban would stop any authorized marches during these periods, with possible charges under the Summary Offences Act for violations. Minns said, "Protests right now in Sydney would be incredibly terrible for our community, in fact, they would rip apart our community." He added there were no protests planned currently. Some Jewish groups and pro-Palestine supporters have condemned the ban. Max Kaiser of the Jewish Council of Australia warned against "allowing culture wars to distract and divide responses to Sunday’s antisemitic mass shooting." He noted support from Palestinian allies who stand against all racism. Jesse McNicoll of Jewish Voices of Inner Sydney said it was "outrageous" to use the community’s pain to block a movement opposing genocide. The Bondi attackers, Naveed Akram and his father Sajid Akram, are said to have been inspired by ISIS. Australian authorities had monitored Naveed in a six-month investigation. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned recent hateful protests, saying, "Hatred starts with language, and then moves to action and vilification." NSW Jewish leaders urged action, linking violent rhetoric to the Bondi tragedy. Former treasurer Josh Frydenberg called for a ban on pro-Palestinian protests, claiming they incite hate. The Palestine Action Group said they oppose all racism and have no protests planned. Minns defended the protest restrictions to manage police resources and avoid community divisions. He said, "We need a summer of calm and togetherness, not division." However, the NSW Council for Civil Liberties criticized the move as "eroding our democratic freedoms." Support helplines are available for those affected by these events.
