India Eases E-Visa Process for Foreign Experts in Manufacturing
December 18, 2025
On December 17, 2025, the Indian government announced a simpler process for domestic companies to get e-visas for foreign engineers and technical experts. These professionals help with machine installation, quality checks, training, and plant design. The change will benefit companies importing machinery, especially from China. Earlier, firms faced visa delays for needed foreign experts.
The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) launched an online module on November 29 to generate sponsorship letters for foreign professionals under the e-Production Investment Business Visa (EB-4 visa). This digital platform speeds up the visa process.
An official said, "The earlier process was cumbersome and lengthy. Now the new system will help domestic firms get e-visas for foreign experts in a shorter time." So far, 129 sponsorship letters have been created.
Foreign experts can use these letters to apply for visas and help Indian manufacturing units. The time to grant visas will be "significantly shorter" now. The process is available for both companies under production-linked incentive (PLI) schemes and others.
In August 2025, the Ministry of Home Affairs issued a circular moving some activities from employment visas to business visas. It created a new sub-category called the B-4 Visa for foreign specialists engaged by Indian firms. This includes tasks like installation, quality maintenance, training, plant design, and more.
The existing e-PLI business visa was removed. The new Production Investment Visa (EB-4) is now issued as an e-visa through an online portal.
To make this easier, Indian companies and LLPs can instantly generate sponsorship letters online via the National Single Window System (NSWS). The platform auto-fills details from government databases, removing the need for ministry approval. The unique sponsorship letter ID helps foreign professionals when applying for the visa on the e-Visa portal, connected directly to NSWS.
This reform aims to boost ease of doing business in India by shortening visa wait times and smoothing out the process for foreign professionals crucial to manufacturing projects.
