University of Calicut VC Walks Out Over Students’ Union Oath Dispute
December 18, 2025
The swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected Departmental Students’ Union (DSU) at the University of Calicut campus faced disruption on Thursday, December 18. Vice-Chancellor P. Raveendran objected to a change in the official oath format. The newly elected functionaries wished to pay tributes to "the martyrs who lost their lives in the struggle to build a new world order" during the ceremony.
However, Mr. Raveendran stated this violated the official oath format, which allows only a solemn oath or swearing in the name of God. When the students refused to follow the official format, the Vice-Chancellor walked out of the event. Registrar Denoj Sebastian also left the venue.
Sources close to the Vice-Chancellor’s office said the official oath had already been given to the new office bearers. The incident highlights a clash over ceremony protocols during the student union transition.
