Ontario Police have cracked down on a large car theft gang involved in stealing and sending luxury vehicles to Middle East countries. Twenty people arrested, including eight of Indian origin. Police charged them with 134 counts and seized 306 cars valued at $25 million. The stolen cars were headed to Syria, Iraq, Egypt, and Lebanon. Authorities identified this as a "sophisticated criminal network" using fake papers through registered freight forwarding companies. They shipped mostly high-end SUVs from multiple Canadian ports to markets in West Africa and the Middle East. The probe, named Project Chicadee, began in August 2023 after a spike in auto thefts in Greater Toronto. Over 30,000 vehicles were stolen in Ontario that year. Names of those arrested include Muhammad Mirza, Amandeep Singh, Sukhwinder Kaloya, Samina Kamran, and others. Police said these 20 people worked together to steal and smuggle cars but were not in one single group. In October and November, police executed search warrants at dozens of homes, industrial sites, and vehicles in Toronto, Brampton, Mississauga, and Quebec. They recovered more than $190,000 in cash, three firearms, and equipment like forklifts. This case highlights a major crackdown on an international car theft and smuggling operation by Ontario Police.
