St. John the Baptist Church in Secunderabad, a historic landmark built in 1812, has recently had its roof tiles replaced to fix multiple leakages. The church, which serves both as a place for worship and a memorial, saw work start in July and finish by October, just after the Hyderabad monsoon eased. P.S. Rajan, managing director of Aptsorbh Private Limited, said the restoration was a challenge due to damaged tiles and worn wooden rafters. His firm used a special treatment involving Cashew Nut Shell Liquid and other oils heated to 1300°C to strengthen the wood. Limestone mortar repairs were also done to blend the new parts with the original structure. The church, originally built for British soldiers in a Muslim kingdom in 1812, was extended in 1826 into a cruciform shape. It was consecrated to St. John the Baptist in 1841 and has a stained glass window of the saint, a belfry, and a music organ from 1908. With restoration almost complete, volunteers have added Christmas decorations around the church. The 200-year-old church is now ready to welcome worshippers for many more festive seasons.
