Report on Stadium Stampede in Bengaluru

July 11, 2025

The Justice Michael Cunha-led judicial inquiry report submitted to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in Bengaluru indicts Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) franchise, event management company DNA Entertainment Pvt Ltd, Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), and several city police officials for the stampede at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium where 11 persons died on June 4. The report also offers recommendations to avoid such incidents in the future. Apart from the five suspended police officials, the report names additional police personnel for their involvement. The State government faced a setback when the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) criticized the suspension of a challenged police official and suggested that RCB shares blame for the stampede. This decision is under review in the High Court of Karnataka. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah accepted the report and mentioned that it will be discussed in the next Cabinet meeting on July 17. Following the incident, the Chief Minister had appointed the judicial commission under Justice Michael Cunha and suspended police officials. Another magisterial inquiry is ongoing led by Bengaluru (Urban) district Deputy Commissioner G. Jagadeesha.
