Political parties in Kerala strongly demanded the Election Commission of India (ECI) to urgently extend the schedule for revising the electoral roll in the state. They said the list of absent, shifted, and deceased (ASD) voters is full of errors. This was raised at a weekly review chaired by Chief Electoral Officer (Kerala), Rathan U. Kelkar. The Supreme Court has recently asked ECI to be sympathetic to requests for more time. The draft electoral roll under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) is due on December 23. Currently, Kerala’s CEO office lists over 24.08 lakh names as 'Uncollectable enumeration forms'. This includes 6,45,548 marked 'untraceable', 8,16,221 'permanently shifted', 1,60,830 in 'others' (those refusing to accept forms), 6,49,885 dead voters, and 1,36,029 duplicated names. Major parties like CPI(M), Congress, CPI, IUML, RSP, and Kerala Congress want extra time to correct these defects before finalising the rolls. Senior CPI(M) leader M.V. Jayarajan gave examples from six booths in Thrikkaripur where voters legally living in those areas were wrongly marked as 'untraceable' or as refusing forms. Issues were also noted in Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam districts with hundreds wrongly listed. Jayarajan disputed the listing of 6.49 lakh dead voters, asking the CEO’s office to explain, citing government death data showing only 2,94,379 deaths in 2025 so far. Congress leader M.K. Rahman said very few in Kerala reject voting, especially since the NOTA option exists. He highlighted Booth 138 in Thiruvananthapuram where 710 of 1200 voters were wrongly listed in the ASD list, many of whom have voted for decades. Parties also criticized the demand for voters to re-enroll due to “bureaucratic glitches.” Jayarajan said, "We don’t understand the logic of asking voters who have been exercising their franchise for years to enrol as new voters." Kelkar urged parties to help contact untraceable voters and share the list with Electoral Registration Officers. The ECI’s goal remains to include all eligible voters in the rolls.
