Kashmir is set to experience wet weather with moderate to heavy snowfall in higher areas starting December 20-21. This coincides with the start of 'Chillai-Kalan,' a harsh 40-day winter period from December 21 to January 31. The local meteorological department said moderate to heavy snow will hit the higher reaches, while plains may see light to moderate rain or snow. Snowfall chances peak during this time, with temperatures dropping sharply across the valley. So far, the valley has seen dry weather, causing an increase in cough and cold illnesses. On December 20, night temperatures rose slightly. Pulwama was the coldest place at minus 3.2°C. Srinagar's temperature improved from -2.1°C to -0.4°C. A thick fog covered Srinagar and most valley parts, especially near water bodies. In South Kashmir, Pahalgam recorded -1°C, Kokernag 0.8°C, and Qazigund -1°C. Kupwara in North Kashmir settled at -0.7°C. Gulmarg remained above freezing with 2°C. The weather office confirmed these temperatures and the forecast for wet weather as Kashmir prepares for the chill of Chillai-Kalan.
