GUWAHATI: An elephant calf less than a week old hit by an express train in Assam’s Hojai district has died from injuries. The calf was taken to the Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation near Kaziranga National Park. Vet Bhaskar Choudhury said the calf had fractured legs and damaged internal organs. "The calf was bleeding from the mouth. We tried our best, but could not save it," he said on Sunday, December 21, 2025. The calf was injured when the Sairang Rajdhani Express rammed into a herd crossing railway tracks between Jamunamukh and Kampur on Saturday. Seven elephants died at the spot, about 126 km east of Guwahati. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has asked the Forest Department to investigate. He urged stronger safety measures along wildlife corridors, especially during low visibility. Railway officials said the accident site was not a notified elephant corridor. Conservationists argue it is a high-risk area. They stress enforcing speed limits and better monitoring since railway lines slice through elephant migration routes.
