Australia Observes Minute's Silence for Bondi Beach Shooting Victims Amid Tense Memorial
December 21, 2025
Australians held a minute's silence on Sunday at 18:47 (07:47 GMT) to honor the 15 people killed in the Bondi Beach shooting one week earlier. The attack targeted a Hanukkah event, killing a 10-year-old girl, a British-born rabbi, and a Holocaust survivor among others.
The memorial was heavily guarded with armed police and security measures new to many Australians. Crowds wore kippas and Australian flags while they listened to speeches and sang songs like Waltzing Matilda, linked to the youngest victim, Matilda.
A 14-year-old survivor, Chaya, used crutches to call for bravery and kindness, saying, "If you guys get inspired by one thing, one thing on all this, be the light in that field of darkness."
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was booed and accused by some in the crowd of failing to stop rising antisemitism after attacks surged post the October 7 Hamas-Israel conflict. As Albanese arrived, a person shouted, "Blood on your hands," highlighting community anger. Albanese accepted responsibility and promised reforms.
New South Wales Premier Chris Minns received praise for admitting government errors and attending victims' funerals. He stated, "We are deeply sorry... This must be confronted," addressing antisemitic hate.
David Ossip, president of the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies, called for a Royal Commission to investigate how the tragedy occurred.
The accused, Naveed Akram, 24, faces 59 charges including 15 murders and committing a terrorist act. His father was among the dead.
Following the attack, Albanese announced measures to fight hate speech, review police and intelligence agencies, reform gun laws, and launched Australia's largest gun buyback since 1996.
The nation also lit candles across homes as a symbol of "light over darkness," marking a solemn and divided moment in Australia's history.
