Russian General Killed in Moscow Car Bomb, Probe Points to Ukraine
December 22, 2025
A Russian general, Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov, 56, was killed in a car bomb attack in Moscow. Russia's Investigative Committee said the bomb exploded under his car on Monday morning. Sarvarov was head of the armed forces' operational training department. Investigators are looking into the possibility that Ukrainian intelligence services planted the bomb. Ukraine has not commented on the attack. The car bomb exploded in a parking lot near an apartment building in southern Moscow. Photos show a white car with its doors blown out, surrounded by other parked vehicles. Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, several Russian military officials have been targeted by bomb attacks in Moscow. In April, Gen Yaroslav Moskalik was killed by a car bomb. In December 2024, Gen Igor Kirillov died from a bomb hidden in a scooter. A Ukrainian source told the BBC that Ukraine's security service was behind Kirillov's death, but Ukraine has not officially confirmed this. Ukraine does not publicly admit or claim responsibility for such targeted attacks.
