CBS News Cancels 60 Minutes Report on Brutal El Salvador Prison Amid Censorship Claims
December 22, 2025
CBS News canceled a 60 Minutes investigation into El Salvador's Cecot prison, where the Trump administration sent over 250 migrants accused of terrorism and gang links. The episode was set to air Sunday but was postponed due to "needed additional reporting," according to CBS. Cecot, Latin America's largest prison, holds 40,000 inmates. Migrants who were deported there reported brutal, torturous conditions described by some lawyers as "state-sanctioned torture." CBS removed all links to the segment and delayed the broadcast.
Correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi said the episode was "screened five times and cleared by both CBS attorneys and Standards and Practices," calling the cancellation a "political" move, not editorial. She warned that letting government refusals block stories gives authorities a "kill switch" on inconvenient reporting.
CBS's new editor-in-chief, Bari Weiss, defended the delay as a normal newsroom practice, saying: "Holding stories that aren't ready for whatever reason... happens every day."
The cancellation drew sharp criticism on social media. Crime writer Don Winslow called it "really bad" for CBS's legacy. Political commentator Krystal Ball said, "The Trump regime does not want you to know what was done to these people." CNN reporter Brian Stelter said some 60 Minutes staff threatened to quit over the issue. The controversy highlights tensions around coverage of politically sensitive topics and accusations of censorship at CBS News.
