Federal MP Josh Burns and Victorian MP Georgie Purcell have happily announced the birth of their daughter, Lilah Poppy Purcell. Lilah was born on Friday, December 19, weighing 2.56 kg. Burns represents the federal seat of Macnamara in Melbourne for the Labor party, while Purcell is a state MP for the Animal Justice party in Victoria. Their daughter's name carries a subtle political nod. 'Lilah,' meaning lilac, reflects the purple color linked to the Animal Justice party. 'Poppy,' a red flower, symbolizes Labor party's color. Purcell said Lilah came early at 37 weeks and five days, calling her "a little impatient" but a much-needed joy for their family. "Becoming a mum was never part of my plan but in just a few short days she has shown me that I simply couldn’t imagine a life without her," Purcell stated. She added that Lilah inspires her to return to parliament and fight for "a fairer, kinder world." Burns, known as one of Labor’s most prominent Jewish MPs, reflected on a tough week dealing with the Bondi terror attack. He said, "My heart will always stay with my community who are in mourning, but I’m also feeling so grateful for the arrival of Lilah." He expressed hope to raise Lilah and his older daughter Tia with pride in their Jewish heritage and safety in Australia. The couple publicly appeared together last year and announced their pregnancy following. Purcell, who has an autoimmune condition making her pregnancy high-risk, plans to return to work in February 2024 and contest the 2026 state election. Their relationship has attracted public attention due to differing political views and Purcell’s support for Palestinian recognition. Lilah Poppy Purcell’s arrival is a fresh chapter for the couple, blending personal joy with their continuing political journeys.
