A Russian general was killed this morning when a bomb went off under his car in southern Moscow. Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov, head of the operational training directorate of the Russian armed forces’ General Staff, died from his injuries. Svetlana Petrenko, spokesperson for Russia’s Investigative Committee, said investigators are pursuing multiple leads. “One of these is that the crime was orchestrated by Ukrainian intelligence services,” she said. Russian media reported the car exploded around 7am in a parking lot on Yaseneva Street, with the driver inside. This follows a similar attack in December 2024, when Lt Gen Igor Kirillov, chief of the military’s nuclear, biological and chemical protection forces, was killed by a bomb hidden on an electric scooter outside his home. His assistant, Ilya Polikarpov, was also killed. The Ukrainian security service claimed responsibility for that attack. Officials are continuing their investigations into Sarvarov’s murder. More updates will follow throughout the day.
