A 19-year-old girl died after falling at an abandoned building in DeKalb County, Georgia. The site, known as the Briarcliff Building on Emory University’s campus, was a filming location for Stranger Things. Leah Palmirotto was exploring the fenced-off, no-trespassing area with friends late at night on December 19. Emergency responders declared her dead shortly after arrival. Authorities confirmed no foul play but are still investigating what caused the fall. It is unclear if she slipped, lost footing, or fell through weak parts of the old building. The Briarcliff Building dates back to the 1960s and has been unused and unsafe for years, with poor lighting and structural decay. Its spooky look made it perfect for the Hawkins National Laboratory in the TV series. Palmirotto’s friends said they were curious explorers, ignoring warnings about the risks of abandoned places at night. Her father described her as “adventurous, outgoing and full of life” and urged others to avoid restricted buildings. A vigil is being planned in her memory. The incident raises concerns over dangers at abandoned filming sites. Netflix has not commented on the tragedy. Police and Emory University continue their investigation.
