Hotel Bhagirathi in Haridwar, located on the banks of the Ganga river, has canceled all Christmas events following protests by Hindu groups. The hotel, owned by the Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department but run by a private chain, had planned plays, DJ nights, and other celebrations. An official confirmed the cancellation after Hindu groups objected to the events advertised on social media. Ujjwal Pandit, Secretary of Shri Ganga Sabha, warned on social media that Christmas celebrations on the Ganges banks would not be tolerated. Pandit stated, “Events related to foreign culture will not be tolerated on the banks of the Ganges,” and threatened dire consequences if the events proceeded. Shri Ganga Sabha organizes religious events like Ganga aarti at Har Ki Pauri, the famous ghat in Haridwar. The controversy led to the immediate halt of the planned Christmas festivities.
