South Western Railway Installs Rooftop Solar at 148 Stations, Saves ₹2.61 Crore This Year
December 24, 2025
South Western Railway (SWR) has installed rooftop solar plants at 148 railway stations across Karnataka and parts of Goa. This move supports Indian Railways' target to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2030.
The solar rollout also covers 38 service buildings like Rail Soudha, divisional offices, hospitals, and training centres. Big workshops and sheds such as Hubballi Workshop (1,045 kWp) and Mysuru Workshop (530 kWp) now use solar power. Solar systems are also running at 302 level crossing gates for uninterrupted green power.
The total solar capacity of SWR reached 7,491.6 kWp by November 2025, up from 6,986 kWp last year. A senior SWR official said, "Regular cleaning, preventive maintenance and performance monitoring have helped improve the capacity utilisation factor and ensure optimum output."
In the current financial year 2025-26, until October, SWR generated 4.13 million units (MU) of solar energy, saving roughly ₹2.61 crore. In 2024-25, solar power reached 6.86 MU with savings of ₹4.07 crore.
Officials stressed that this steady growth cuts electricity costs and lessens reliance on conventional energy. SWR also procures green power through 36 traction sub-stations, adding to their renewable energy use. The official added, "Green power procurement has resulted in substantial financial savings while reducing dependence on conventional energy sources."
