BJP Protests Karnataka Hate Speech Bill, Calls It Anti-Constitutional
December 24, 2025
Members of the BJP district unit in Yadgir protested on Wednesday against the Karnataka Hate Speech and Hate Crimes (Prevention) Bill 2025. They called the Bill anti-Constitutional. Basavaraj Vibhutihalli, the district BJP president, said, "The Bill is against the basic tenets of the Constitution." He warned that the State government could misuse the law to stop Opposition parties, journalists, and the public from speaking out about government matters and airing grievances. He said, "If Opposition parties and journalists criticise the government on its governance, they will possibly be punished under the new Bill, considering such criticism as hate speech." Other leaders at the protest said that social media discussions about government issues would be curbed by the Bill. They demanded the Bill be revoked. BJP leaders Rachanagouda Mudnal, Mahesh Mudnal, Devendra Nath Nad, Parashuram Tumkut, Venkatareddy Abbetumkur, and others also joined the protest.
