Three Maoists, including one woman cadre, were killed in a gunfight with security forces in Odisha's Kandhamal district, police said on Thursday. The encounter happened in Gumma forest near Belghar police station on Wednesday night. Two male Maoists were identified as Bari alias Rakesh, CPI(Maoist)'s area committee member, and dalam member Amrit. Both were from Chhattisgarh and had a total bounty of ₹23.65 lakh on their heads, according to a senior police officer. The body of another unidentified woman Maoist was found near the site the next morning. A Special Operation Group (SOG) team acted on a tip-off and started a combing operation in the forest. The team met the Maoists and exchanged heavy gunfire. Two male bodies were recovered immediately, while the woman's body was found later some distance away. A revolver, a .303 rifle, and a walkie-talkie set were seized from the Maoists. No security forces personnel were harmed. Authorities have increased combing operations in the area. This gunfight came one day after 22 Maoists surrendered to Odisha DGP YB Khurania in nearby Malkangiri district.
