Two Paddle Boarders Rescued After Drifting 10km Across Port Phillip Bay on Christmas Day
December 26, 2025
Two paddle boarders in Victoria were rescued after being swept over 10km across Port Phillip Bay on Christmas Day. The pair, a 51-year-old woman and her 17-year-old stepson, set out from Portarlington around 3pm but drifted out when conditions worsened. They were found lying on their boards, waving for help near Wyndham harbour around 6.20pm. They were not wearing lifejackets but were uninjured, though cold and tired. Police, Life Saving Victoria, the coast guard, and a police helicopter worked together to find them after their family alerted authorities about 5pm. The pair said, "We are so grateful for the outcome but still trying to come to terms with how quickly a beautiful, carefree afternoon turned into an almost tragedy." They also thanked all agencies, saying, "The decisive and quick action led not only to our rescue, but our survival. Thank you so much." On the same day, police rescued a kayaker in Lake King, Paynesville, and a mother with her two teenage daughters from Westernport Bay after they got into trouble while kayaking. All were rescued safely thanks to the coordinated efforts of police, rescue teams, and a Westpac rescue helicopter. These rescues highlight the dangers of water activities and the vital role of emergency services in keeping people safe.
