Violence broke out in West Karbi Anglong district earlier this week, leaving 173 Assam Police and CRPF personnel injured and two persons dead, police said on Saturday, December 27, 2025. The unrest started after Karbi community agitators protested for 15 days, demanding the eviction of alleged illegal settlers, mainly from Bihar, from Village Grazing Reserve (VGR) and Professional Grazing Reserve lands. On December 22 and 23, 139 injured personnel received first aid onsite while 33 were sent to hospitals, according to the Assam Police's post on X. The Kheroni area saw major violence on December 22 when police firing killed one person and another man was burnt alive inside his house. The protests intensified after police moved three agitators to a Guwahati hospital, claiming it was for health reasons. A previous eviction attempt was blocked by the Gauhati High Court's interim order last year. On December 26, a tripartite meeting was held involving the state government, Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), and protestors. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma assured the government will petition the Gauhati High Court to lift the eviction stay for grazing lands in the districts. Meanwhile, strict security and prohibitory orders remain in place with internet services suspended as calm returns to the region.
