Rajasthan is quickening the installation of rooftop solar power plants under the revamped distribution sector scheme (RDSS). This effort aims to reduce power losses and improve electricity supply quality. The fixing of meters on transformers is also being pushed hard under RDSS. The Rural Electrification Corporation (REC), which is the Centre’s nodal agency for RDSS, reviewed the work progress over the weekend. REC Chairperson Jitendra Srivastava said, "The number of teams in the field should be increased to accelerate the metering process and action taken against the infrastructure service providers over their failure to meet targets." State discoms’ Chairperson Arti Dogra and various field officials attended the review meeting. The meeting covered project management, contract execution, monitoring mechanisms, scheme guideline adherence, timely electricity dues recovery, and subsidy receipt. Mr. Srivastava noted that aggregate technical and commercial losses dropped from 17.49% in 2021-22, before RDSS, to 14.26% in 2024-25. Under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, 2.36 lakh applications were received from consumers, and solar modules were installed for 1.15 lakh. The Centre has released grants for 1.04 lakh consumers in Rajasthan. Mr. Srivastava urged discom officials to create awareness among rural consumers and encourage citizens to use RDSS benefits. RDSS aims to modernize power distribution with smart metering, infrastructure upgrades, and efficiency reforms linked to performance targets. Ms. Dogra added, "The scheme of 150 units of free electricity per month was expected to become popular among power consumers after the distribution of State subsidies worth ₹17,000 by the three discoms in Jaipur, Jodhpur and Ajmer."
