Bengaluru to Get 228 km New Roads Plus 90 km Potential Under Sanchara Yukta Project
December 27, 2025
Bengaluru's B-SMILE is set to build 227.917 km of new roads within Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) limits at a cost of ₹199.4 crore. The Sanchara Yukta project targets roads along storm-water drains and lakes to fight traffic congestion. Roads will be built across East (96.132 km), North (59.94 km), West (36.91 km), South (20.8 km), and Central zones (14.135 km).
Work has started on a road linking Inner Ring Road in Koramangala to Sarjapur Road. Beyond this, B-SMILE sees a chance to add 90.179 km more roads in Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) areas where population and development are growing.
The project faces criticism for reducing buffer zones around lakes and storm-water drains. Experts warn this could harm ecosystems and the health of lakes. The new notification cutting buffer zones means higher land acquisition costs and more stakeholders must be involved.
A key highlight is reviving plans to widen Wind Tunnel Road, aimed at easing traffic on HAL Airport Road. B-SMILE will realign and widen Wind Tunnel Road to shorten the route and create a new alternative to Outer Ring Road for central and southeastern Bengaluru residents.
Technical Director B.S. Prahallad told The Hindu, "The project will be a game changer for ORR and Bellandur commuters, as it becomes a viable alternative. A major advantage is that it will decongest HAL Airport Road, which is gradually seeing an increase in vehicular traffic."
Previously, HAL agreed to allow BBMP land use for Suranjandas Underpass on HAL Airport Road in exchange for Wind Tunnel Road widening. However, land issues paused the widening until now.
This ambitious road expansion aims to ease Bengaluru's growing traffic woes while balancing environmental concerns.
