Storm Johannes Kills Two in Sweden, Disrupts Travel Across Nordic Nations
December 28, 2025
A powerful winter storm named Johannes hit Nordic countries, killing two people in Sweden and causing widespread disruptions. The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute warned of strong winds across much of northern Sweden. A man in his 50s died after a tree fell on him at Kungsberget ski resort. Another death involved a utility worker, said regional company Hemab. The storm caused power outages affecting over 40,000 homes in Sweden alone. Rail services were canceled, and many flights and ferries across the Nordic region were disrupted. In Norway's Nordland, emergency teams handled over 200 weather-related incidents. Power cut affected about 23,000 homes there. Finland saw more than 33,000 homes lose power, and flights at Kittila airport were grounded after strong winds pushed two planes off the runway. No injuries were reported in Finland. Sweden suspended many train services until Sunday noon, said the Swedish Transport Administration.
