Indian Worker Gets £70,000 After Winning Racial Discrimination Case at KFC London
December 28, 2025
An Indian worker won nearly £70,000 compensation for racial discrimination and wrongful dismissal at a KFC outlet in London. Madhesh Ravichandran from Tamil Nadu told the tribunal that his Sri Lankan manager used the racist word “slave” against him. Judge Paul Abbott said, “We have found on the facts that the claimant was subjected to less favourable treatment… his holiday request was refused because he was Indian, while (manager) Kajan prioritised requests from Sri Lankan Tamil colleagues, and he was referred to as a ‘slave,’ which is self-evidently less favourable treatment because of his race.” Ravichandran joined KFC West Wickham in January 2023. Problems started soon after. In July, the manager forced him to work long hours, causing Madhesh to resign. The judge agreed that this was due to the manager’s “persistent efforts” for excessive work. Later, Kajan was “racially abusive and threatening” during calls. The tribunal said, “This racial abuse from a manager had the purpose and effect of violating the claimant’s dignity. He was ‘summarily dismissed’ while serving out his notice and was denied his statutory right to one week’s notice.” Madhesh was awarded £62,690 in compensation, plus holiday pay and other dues, totaling about £66,800 (around Rs 81 lakh). The tribunal also ordered Nexus Foods Limited, KFC West Wickham’s operator, to run anti-discrimination training for all staff, including managers. This training must finish within six months of the ruling.
