Indian officials on Sunday denied claims by Bangladesh police that suspects in the killing of Islamist youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi had crossed into Meghalaya. Dhaka Metropolitan Police Additional Commissioner S.N. Nazrul Islam had said two suspects, Faisal Karim Masud and Alamgir Sheikh, entered Meghalaya with local help. He added two local assistants, Purti and Sami, were arrested by Indian authorities. Mr. Islam said, "According to our information, the suspects entered India via the Haluaghat border. After crossing, they were initially received by an individual named Purti. Later, a taxi driver named Sami transported them to Tura city in Meghalaya." He added, "We are maintaining communication with Indian authorities through both formal and informal channels to ensure their arrest and extradition." However, diplomatic sources and Meghalaya Police officials told The Hindu that this information was inaccurate. They denied any knowledge of such arrests or the suspects entering India. Sharif Osman Hadi died in Singapore on December 18 while being treated for a bullet wound to the head. His death has caused unrest, sparking violence against minority communities in Bangladesh. Hadi was a key figure in the 2024 uprising against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's government.
