India Regulates AI Under IT Laws but Lacks Consumer Safety Measures

India manages the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) through existing laws like the IT Act and related Rules. It enforces due diligence from platforms under these laws. The financial sector is also regulated alongside privacy and data protection regulations. Despite these efforts, India does not yet have a consumer safety regime that addresses the state’s duty of care related to AI. This gap means there is no specific framework that guarantees consumer protection against AI risks. The government continues to develop policies but the consumer safety angle remains unaddressed.
