Man Gets Life for Raising Hizb-ul-Mujahideen Module in Assam, NIA Says
December 31, 2025
Md Kamruj Zaman, also known as Kamaruddin, was sentenced to life imprisonment for raising a module of the Pakistan-based terror group Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) in Assam. The NIA special court in Guwahati handed down three punishments under anti-terror laws on Wednesday, December 31, 2025. These sentences will run at the same time. Zaman was also fined ₹5,000 for each conviction, with an extra three months' jail if he fails to pay. The NIA said Zaman created the HM module to carry out terrorist acts during 2017-18. The group planned to "strike terror in the minds of the people," the agency added. Zaman recruited several people, including Sahnawaz Alom, Saidul Alam, and Omar Faruk, to join the module. In March 2019, the NIA charged five individuals, including these three and another man named Jaynal Uddin. Sahnawaz, Saidul, and Omar pleaded guilty and were convicted. Jaynal Uddin died during the trial due to illness, the NIA stated.
