Villupuram Police Install Over 100 CCTV Cameras on Highways to Catch Traffic Offenders
January 1, 2026
The Villupuram district police have increased their highway surveillance by setting up over 100 CCTV cameras around important junctions within a 20 km area. Fourteen high-resolution cameras cover major stretches like Tirukoyilur Road, Villupuram-Chennai national highway, and Trichy Road, among others. Additionally, 86 CCTVs have been installed on approach roads connecting to the highways.
“All CCTV cameras come with a network video recorder and backup system linked to the new Police Control Room at the Integrated Collectorate complex in Villupuram,” said a police officer. This setup helps in easy retrieval of footage for investigations.
The Police Control Room was inaugurated on Tuesday by District Collector Sheik Abdul Rahman and Deputy Inspector General of Police E.S. Uma, with Superintendent of Police P. Saravanan also present.
The cameras will catch traffic rule-breakers for offences like red-light jumping, speeding, using mobile phones while driving, and not wearing helmets or seat belts. They also capture vehicle number plates.
The police added that these cameras will aid not just in traffic law enforcement but also in crime prevention and detection.
