Deadly Explosion at Swiss Ski Resort Bar Kills Several Dozen, Injures 100
January 1, 2026
Early Thursday morning, a powerful explosion ripped through Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana, a luxury ski resort in Switzerland. Police confirm that "several dozen" people died and around 100 were injured in the blast. The explosion happened at about 1:30 am local time, when more than 100 people were celebrating the New Year inside the bar.
Gaetan Lathion, a Wallis canton police spokesperson, said, "There has been an explosion of unknown origin. There are several injured, and several dead." Emergency services responded immediately after smoke was seen at the bar.
Firefighters from across the region arrived quickly, and injured people were taken to several hospitals. A police official described everyone involved in the rescue as "stunned" by this "painful moment."
The president of the state council expressed his condolences to the victims and their families, saying the evening "should have been a celebration but turned into a nightmare." He added that the blaze "has cost the lives of many people."
Police and other officials are preparing to give more updates as the emergency operation continues. Earlier police statements confirmed the incident is serious, with multiple deaths and injuries, and a large rescue team is on site. Some unverified reports suggested at least 10 deaths, but this number is expected to rise. The cause of the explosion remains unknown.
