Director-General of Police (Prisons and Correctional Services) Alok Kumar has launched an inquiry after a video surfaced showing inmates gambling, smoking, and drinking alcohol inside Kalaburagi Central Prison. The video sparked public outrage and recalls past prison scandals. A case has been registered against four inmates at Farhatabad police station under various legal sections, including the Information Technology Act. Preliminary checks reveal the video is about two to three months old. One inmate, Munikrishna alias Kappe from Bengaluru, was released on December 2, 2025. DGP Alok Kumar expressed serious concern and called the incident "unfortunate and completely unacceptable." He instructed Additional Inspector-General of Prisons P.V. Anand Reddy to start a preliminary inquiry on Friday. Alok Kumar will personally visit the prison on Saturday to investigate facts and find any lapses in administration or supervision. “I will also personally visit the Kalaburagi Central Prison to ascertain the facts and identify any lapses,” said Mr. Alok Kumar to The Hindu. The tough action comes a day after similar videos showing illicit activities in the jail went viral online.
