Mysuru Protest Condemns Pregnant Woman’s Murder Over Inter-Caste Marriage and Rising Gender Violence
January 1, 2026
In Mysuru, various organisations held a protest near Gandhi Square against violence on women. They condemned the killing of a pregnant woman by her father in Dharwad, due to her inter-caste marriage. Protesters wore black armbands to show their anger at murders in the name of "family honour." Karnataka Mahila Dourjanya Virodhi Okkoota said all participating groups want the government to investigate these crimes fairly and ensure justice for victims.
Groups at the protest included Samata Vedike, Samata Study Centre, All India Democratic Women’s Association, Dhwani Mahila Okkuta, All India Progressive Women’s Association, People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), Odanadi, left parties, and other activists.
The Okkuta expressed deep concern over increasing cases of violence against women in Karnataka and across India. They pointed to rapes, dowry deaths, sexual assaults on minors, and gang rapes happening even in schools and religious places. They said, "Due to deeply entrenched patriarchal values in society, it has become difficult for women to even marry a person of their choice. In the name of so-called ‘family honour,’ parents themselves are committing the brutal act of killing their daughters, a cruelty that has sadly become common."
The statement also recalled the brutal rape and murder of a nine-year-old nomadic girl near Mysuru's Dasara Exhibition Grounds. The Okkuta said, "It is deeply unfortunate that, barring women’s organisations and progressive-minded individuals, society has remained passively silent in face of these injustices."
