Diarrhoea Outbreak in Indore Kills Up to 14; Contaminated Water Blamed
January 2, 2026
Indore Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava reported on January 2, 2026, that 10 people died due to a diarrhoea outbreak in Bhagirathpura caused by contaminated water. Local residents claim 14 deaths, including a six-month-old baby. The health department has confirmed only 4 deaths so far. "According to health department data, four people have died due to the diarrhoea outbreak in Bhagirathpura. However, I have received information about 10 deaths due to this outbreak," Mayor Bhargava told PTI. Drinking water tests indicate contamination from a leak in the main pipeline near a police outpost, where a toilet was built over the leak. Chief Medical and Health Officer Dr Madhav Prasad Hasani said lab tests from a city medical college confirmed water contamination but withheld detailed results. More than 1,400 residents have suffered vomiting and diarrhoea in the last nine days. By January 1, 272 patients were admitted to hospitals; 71 have been discharged. Of the remaining 201 patients, 32 are in intensive care units. Officials have not confirmed if the outbreak is cholera, pending further data from health authorities.
