Telangana's Musi Rejuvenation Phase-I DPR Near Complete; ₹4,100 Crore ADB Aid Sought
January 2, 2026
The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for Phase-I of Telangana's Musi Rejuvenation Project is nearly finished. This phase covers 21 km from Osmansagar to Bapughat (9.5 km) and Himayatsagar to Bapughat (11.5 km). The DPR will be ready in a few days, with clear work plans expected before Sankranti.
After DPR completion, project cost estimates will be made before March 31, the end of the financial year, and then work will begin. The State Government has requested ₹4,100 crore in financial help from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), which has given in-principle approval. The Central Government has also allowed DPR preparation for the first phase, said Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy.
The government plans a PowerPoint presentation in the Assembly to explain Phase-I’s main points after receiving the DPR. Mr. Reddy said the project aims to clean the Musi river. This will help Hyderabad, Rangareddy, and Nalgonda districts by reducing pollution permanently.
“Nalgonda district is bearing the brunt of pollution. It has twin problems of fluoride affected waters and pollution flowing through Musi river. It is like God himself has cursed the people of the district,” Mr. Reddy said during a debate in the Legislative Assembly on January 2, 2026.
The government also plans to develop a 55 km stretch from Gandipet to Gowrelli with an elevated corridor. The project includes linking four rivers—Musi, Isa, Krishna, and Godavari—to solve Hyderabad’s drinking water issues permanently.
Additionally, the Gandhi Sarovar project will start soon. It features a 150-ft Gandhi statue and covers 500 acres. It includes 200 acres of defence land, with Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh agreeing to release 55 acres to the state. The government is asking for another 50 acres to begin work.
Mr. Reddy urged opposition MLAs to visit global riverfront developments to offer useful suggestions. The government is ready to cover travel costs if needed. He noted some MLAs missed previous study trips abroad, including to South Korea, to learn from similar projects.
