Deadly Fire at Swiss Alpine Bar Kills Over 40 on New Year's Eve
January 2, 2026
A deadly fire ripped through Le Constellation bar in the Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana during New Year’s Eve celebrations. More than 40 people died, and dozens suffered serious burn injuries. The blaze started around 1:30 am as people welcomed the new year. Police arrived quickly but the fire had already engulfed the basement club. Witnesses said a bartender carried a waitress holding champagne bottles with sparklers near the low ceiling, which may have triggered the fire. Officials said the flame might have caused combustible gases to ignite violently, spreading the blaze fast. The bar was packed with a young crowd, many teenagers among the victims. People panicked and rushed to escape through a narrow stairway and small door. Some broke windows to get out. Emergency teams arrived soon and treated the injured at local and nearby hospitals. The town of Crans-Montana banned fireworks due to dry weather. Authorities found no sign of arson. Many victims could not be identified instantly due to severe burns. Switzerland declared five days of mourning with flags at half-mast. Around 15 Italians and 8 French citizens are reported missing. Police have blocked the site for investigation as forensic teams work on the tragedy.
