Swiss Crans-Montana Bar Fire Kills 40, Injures 115; Victims Sent Across Europe for Care
January 2, 2026
A terrible fire broke out during a New Year’s Eve party at the Constellation bar and basement nightclub in Crans-Montana, a Swiss ski resort. About 40 people died and 115 were hurt. Many victims had severe burns, making identification very hard. Crans-Montana mayor Nicolas Féraud said, “The first objective is to assign names to all the bodies.” Swiss President Guy Parmelin called it “a calamity of unprecedented, terrifying proportions.”
Swiss officials use dental records and DNA to identify the victims. Mathias Reynard, head of Valais canton, said, “Nothing can be told to the families unless we are 100% sure.” The injured were treated in burns units in Zurich, Lausanne, and Geneva. More patients were sent to hospitals in Belgium, France, and Germany. The EU offered medical aid, and countries like France, Sweden, and North Macedonia opened beds for the victims.
Italy’s ambassador to Switzerland said six Italians remain missing and 13 are hospitalized. Italy reports 47 deaths, but Swiss officials say the count is about 40. France has nine injured and eight missing. Australia reported one injured citizen.
Relatives used social media to find their loved ones. Eleonore, 17, shared, “We took loads of photos and put them on Instagram, Facebook, every social network possible... but there’s nothing.” University Hospital Lausanne treats 22 badly burned patients mainly between 16 and 26 years old. Hospital director Claire Charmet warned that recovery will be long and intense, lasting weeks or months.
