Pathankayam Waterfalls to Get Lifeguards and Lifejackets in New Safety Push
January 3, 2026
A new safe destination project will be launched at Pathankayam waterfalls, a popular eco-tourism spot where around 20 tourists have drowned over time. The Tourism department and police are supporting this effort. The plan focuses on deploying trained lifeguards and making lifejackets mandatory for all visitors entering the area.
For years, tourists have accessed dangerous parts of the waterfalls without any controls. This caused many accidents and hurt the place's reputation. Local body members said the site could be included in the State government’s Destination Challenge Scheme, with ₹2 crore in financial aid expected.
The project also considers building retaining walls and barriers to block risky zones. Residents want CCTV cameras installed to monitor restricted areas and help police act quickly against rule-breakers.
Members from Thiruvambadi grama panchayat who recently checked the site said the plan will ensure police play an active role. They will also push for a new police outpost to cover major eco-tourism spots.
Plans are ready to build a tourism facilitation centre, information counter, cafeteria, parking areas, clean toilets, and first-aid stations. Local residents will be invited to join sustainable tourism efforts.
A local tourism entrepreneur from Kodenchery said, "The participation of Thiruvambadi and Kodenchery grama panchayat will be crucial for the implementation of projects proposed by the Tourism department. Many of these proposals have remained pending for years due to a lack of coordination."
