The University Grants Commission (UGC) has ordered a probe into the death of a student at Government Degree College, Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh. The student died while undergoing treatment at Ludhiana hospital on December 26, 2025. Officials said the death occurred following allegations of ragging. "UGC has taken serious cognisance of the tragic death of a student at Government Degree College, Dharamshala. The UGC Anti-Ragging Helpline registered a suo motu complaint based on media reports alleging ragging leading to death," a senior UGC official said. The UGC has set up a Fact-Finding Committee to investigate the incident. Police are also conducting an inquiry. The official added, "UGC assures that culprits will not be spared and that stringent action will follow. Student safety is paramount." The police have booked three students — Harshita, Aakriti, and Komolika — for ragging and voluntarily causing hurt. A professor named Ashok Kumar has been booked for sexually harassing the 19-year-old woman. The case was registered on January 1 after the student's father filed a complaint. He alleged that on September 18, 2025, his daughter was beaten by the three senior students, and the professor indulged in obscene acts with her. The father claimed his daughter fell into severe mental stress and fear after these incidents, which led to her health failing rapidly. The tragic event has spurred the UGC and police to act firmly and ensure justice.
