Explosions and Power Outage Rock Caracas Amid US-Venezuela Tensions
January 3, 2026
At around 2am local time, loud explosions and low-flying aircraft were reported in Caracas, Venezuela’s capital. At least seven explosions shook the city, with people rushing outside in several neighborhoods. A southern part of the city lost power. The reason for these explosions is not yet clear. Venezuela’s government did not immediately comment on the incident. The event comes during a period of increased tension between the US and Venezuela. Recently, the US military has been targeting boats said to be smuggling drugs near Venezuelan waters. Former US President Donald Trump has promised land operations in Venezuela to pressure President Nicolás Maduro to step down. This effort includes more sanctions, a stronger US military presence, and more than two dozen attacks on suspected drug boats in the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea. The Pentagon has not yet responded to requests for comments. The situation is still developing.
