Venezuela accuses US of seizing control after reported strikes on Caracas and key states
January 3, 2026
Venezuela’s government accused the US of launching missile strikes on the capital Caracas and three other states early Saturday. Explosions, loud noises, and low-flying aircraft were reported. President Nicolás Maduro declared a nationwide state of emergency and warned the attacks aimed to seize Venezuela’s strategic resources like oil and minerals.
The government called on its citizens to rise up, saying, "People to the streets! The Bolivarian Government calls on all social and political forces in the country to activate mobilization plans and repudiate this imperialist attack." Maduro also said he had "ordered all national defence plans to be implemented" and declared "a state of external disturbance."
Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro tweeted, "Right now they are bombing Caracas … bombing it with missiles," and urged the UN Security Council to hold an emergency meeting. He added, "Colombia since yesterday is a member of the United Nations Security Council and must be convened immediately. Establish the international legality of the aggression against Venezuela."
CBS News reported that US President Donald Trump had ordered the attacks, including on military sites. At least seven explosions were heard around 2 am local time, shaking the city. Eyewitnesses saw smoke rising from the La Carlota military airfield and Fuerte Tiuna military base in Caracas.
Venezuela called on the international community to condemn the attacks as "a flagrant violation of international law placing millions of lives at risk." The US and Pentagon did not immediately respond. These strikes come after months of US pressure and military buildup near Venezuela, aiming to remove Maduro from power.
