Telangana to Launch 24/7 Eye Care Clinics Across State, Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital as Hub
January 3, 2026
The Telangana government announced plans to open Eye Care Clinics throughout the state. Health Minister C. Damodar Raja Narasimha told the Legislative Council on January 3, 2026, that these clinics will provide round-the-clock eye care instead of short-term camps. The Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital in Hyderabad will serve as the central hub managing these clinics. An ophthalmology specialist is appointed as Nodal Officer to coordinate screening and surgical referrals between the hub and local clinics. A high-level expert committee is reviewing the burden of eye diseases and will suggest treatment protocols. The government will finalize clinic operations after the committee’s report.
The minister noted the previous Kanti Velugu programme in 2018 and 2023 focused on screening and giving spectacles but did not include surgeries. About 9.3 lakh people were found needing surgery during the programme. Under the National Programme for Control of Blindness and Visual Impairment (NPCBVI), Telangana performed 6,12,973 cataract surgeries in 2024 and 2025 combined. Additionally, 33,65,832 schoolchildren were screened for eye problems, and 76,176 received spectacles. This effort shows a significant scale-up in eye care services across Telangana.
