Janandolana Mahamaitri sounds alarm on Karnataka public universities, demands urgent reforms
January 3, 2026
Janandolana Mahamaitri from Mysuru has raised serious concerns about the future of Karnataka’s public universities. The group says these universities are struggling to survive due to many problems. They demand urgent steps to improve teaching and appoint permanent faculty because vacancies continue to rise.
The organisation criticized the state government for spending money on bodies like the Higher Education Council, which they claim are used to give jobs to former Vice-Chancellors instead of helping universities. They want a new Higher Education Commission led by education experts to protect universities’ future. This commission should work with skilled officials from the Finance and Higher Education Departments. They also want all university finances to be openly shared on the commission’s website.
At a press conference on January 3, 2026, Mahamaitri called for a detailed investigation into the University of Mysore’s affairs. They want a committee led by the Chief Secretary to look into complaints and submit a report to the Chief Minister. They stressed the need to protect the legacy of the university, founded by leaders like Kuvempu.
The organisation also criticized frequent changes in Principal Secretaries of the Higher Education Department and said the Higher Education Minister has not seriously tackled university problems. They asked for clarity on the Prof. Sukhdev Thorat Committee report after the state government rejected the National Education Policy 2020 and plans its own state policy. The report’s fate and public discussion remain unclear.
Mahamaitri strongly opposed the University of Mysore Vice-Chancellor’s reported plan to restrict protests on campus. They blamed delays in appointing guest lecturers at Maharaja’s and Yuvaraja’s Colleges for harming academics due to permanent staff shortages. The group also worried about pension delays for retired university employees.
