JNUSU Leaders Summoned by Police After Protesting Library Surveillance
January 3, 2026
The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) said the university administration and Delhi Police are targeting student leaders. Police have served enquiry notices to current and former union leaders after protests against new surveillance measures in the JNU library. An FIR was lodged against JNUSU president Aditi Mishra, vice president Gopika, general secretary Sunil, joint secretary Danish, and former president Nitish Kumar. "JNUSU office bearers and former JNU president have been called to the police station for questioning," Ms. Mishra told PTI. The protests oppose facial recognition cameras and magnetic entry gates installed at the B R Ambedkar Central Library. The union said these moves silence student voices and intimidate activists. Students have long opposed poor library conditions, including fund cuts, fewer books, less seating, and shorter hours. Instead of improving these, the administration invested in surveillance tech that limits movement and invades privacy. Magnetic gates were first installed in August 2025 without student consultation. Large protests then forced their removal. Officials promised future decisions would include student input. Yet, the gates were reinstalled during the November 2025 JNUSU elections when many students were busy voting. The new union protested, but the administration responded with proctorial notices and police complaints. JNUSU condemned this as a "dastardly attack" and demanded all cases against student leaders be withdrawn immediately.
